Point-of-use and under-sink water heaters

An under sink tankless water heater puts hot water right where you need it. Small tankless and mini-tank heaters for kitchen sinks, bathroom faucets, showers, garages and tiny homes.

What is a point-of-use water heater?

A point-of-use water heater sits close to the fixture it serves, usually under a sink, in a vanity or on the wall near a shower. Because the hot water travels only a short distance, you get it almost instantly and waste less water waiting. Point-of-use units come in two styles: tankless (heats on demand) and mini tank (stores 2.5–7 gallons).

Which one fits your sink or shower?

Use Recommended type Typical power
Hand washing, bathroom faucet 120V point-of-use tankless 2.5–3.5 kW
Kitchen sink Mini tank or 240V point-of-use tankless 1.4 kW mini tank / 6–9 kW tankless
Single shower (warm climate) 240V tankless 9–13 kW
Single shower (cold climate) 240V tankless 13–18 kW
Tiny home or cabin 240V tankless or small propane unit 18–27 kW

120V vs 240V

A standard 120V tankless water heater (sometimes called 110 volt) is easy to install but limited by the circuit: about 3.5 kW maximum. That makes it great for hand washing at 0.5 GPM, but not enough for a shower or a full kitchen faucet. 240V units deliver far more heat and suit showers and kitchen sinks, but need a dedicated double-pole breaker.

Shoppers often search for a 120v tankless water heater electric, 110 volt tankless water heater or under sink tankless water heater 120v. These small water heaters electric units are ideal for hand washing. For a tankless water heater for shower use, or any electric water heater for shower, step up to 240V. A mini tankless water heater or compact tankless water heater fits inside a vanity.

Frequently asked questions

Can a 120V tankless water heater run a shower?

Usually not well. A 120V unit is limited to about 3.5 kW, which gives only around 0.5 GPM at a useful temperature rise. For a shower, look at 240V units of 9–18 kW or more, depending on your climate.

What is the difference between point-of-use tankless and a mini tank?

A point-of-use tankless heater warms water as it flows and never runs out, but has limited flow. A mini tank (2.5–7 gallons) stores a small amount of hot water, delivers it at full faucet flow and plugs into a standard 120V outlet in many cases, but it can run out.

Do point-of-use water heaters work with a main water heater?

Yes. Many homes add one at a far sink to deliver instant hot water while the main heater's water travels through the pipes. It saves water you would otherwise waste waiting.

Can I plug an under-sink water heater into an outlet?

Some small 120V units and mini tanks have a plug; others must be hardwired. Check the product's electrical requirements and use a dedicated circuit where the manual requires one.
