Tankless boilers, combi units and tankless coils

Can a tankless water heater boiler setup heat both rooms and water? Here’s how combi boilers, tankless coils and combo systems compare.

Key takeaways

  • A combi boiler provides space heating and on-demand hot water from one wall-hung unit.
  • A tankless coil heats domestic water inside an existing boiler; it is common in older oil and gas systems.
  • Using a standard tankless water heater for space heating is only allowed when the manufacturer approves it for combination use.

Three ways to combine heat and hot water

System How it works Good for
Combi boiler One wall-hung unit heats both hydronic heating and domestic hot water Homes with radiators or radiant floors replacing a boiler
Tankless coil Coil inside an existing boiler heats domestic water Older oil and gas boiler homes
Tankless heater with approved combo use Approved tankless unit supplies hot water and a hydronic air handler Some smaller homes with suitable design

Combi boilers

Combi boilers from brands such as Navien (NCB series) and others are condensing, wall-hung units. They give priority to hot water when a tap opens, then return to space heating. They are efficient and compact but have hot-water flow limits like any tankless unit. See the Navien guide.

Tankless coils

Common in older homes with oil or gas boilers. The boiler must stay hot to supply hot water, which wastes energy in summer. Many homeowners replace a tankless coil with an indirect tank or a standalone tankless water heater.

Radiant floors and tankless water heaters

Radiant systems need steady, low-temperature water and correct controls. A standard tankless water heater is not a boiler and may short-cycle or lose warranty coverage if used for heating. Use a unit approved for combination or space-heating use and have the system designed by a heating professional.

Choosing

If you are replacing both a boiler and a water heater, a combi boiler is worth considering. If you only need hot water, see natural gas tankless water heaters.

Frequently asked questions

What is a combi boiler?

A combi (combination) boiler heats water for radiators or radiant floors and also heats domestic hot water on demand, like a tankless water heater. It saves space by replacing a boiler and a water heater.

Can a tankless water heater be used for radiant floor heat?

Only if the manufacturer approves the model for space heating or combination use and the system is designed with the correct controls, pumps, heat exchanger or air handler. Otherwise, use a boiler or combi boiler.

What is a tankless coil water heater?

A coil of pipe inside a boiler that heats domestic water when you open a tap. It works without a separate water heater but requires the boiler to run, which can be inefficient in summer.

This guide is general information for U.S. homeowners, not professional advice. Gas, electrical and venting work must follow the manufacturer’s instructions and local codes, and in most areas requires a licensed plumber, electrician or gas fitter and a permit. Specifications and prices change; always confirm details on the product page and in the installation manual.
